My night at the WTA Championships showed me just how far we’ve come baby

I was invited to Fort Worth, Tx., for the doubles draw ceremony for the WTA Championships. The flights were named after me and Pam Shriver, so I could not say no. It was held at the exclusive Drover Hotel in the historic stockyards area in Mule Alley. After being a part of this ritual for at least 30 years, it was strange to find myself on the outside looking in. I am an Original, yes, and part of the 9 who helped pave the way for women’s tennis. As I watched the ceremony, I also took time to reflect on how we started and how far we have come baby.

Our first championship was in 1972 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Ca., and sponsored by Colgate. After that, Virginia Slims dominated the women’s tour through the 70s and early 80s.

I was the former player finding myself in present, and it was a bit surreal. I was watching the interaction between WTA staff, coaches, parents, significant others and players. I used to be part of that scene so long ago.

The players were dressed to the 9’s and looked like Amazons ready to conquer the world.  The room was buzzing with excitement with the doubles draw being first and I choosing the names behind the Texas belt buckles that held the teams. After the doubles came the singles draw featuring the top eight women in the world.  Nancy Richey also an Original 9, hosted one flight and former No. 1. Tracy Austin the other. It was a beautiful night for women’s tennis and me. To see that 52 years later the Original 9’s vision and fight for equality became a reality with these young and strong women who have also changed the game for those who come after.

Congratulations and good luck to all the players this week and to WTA & it’s staff…let’s keep moving forward!!
