HAPPY FATHER’S DAY
IT’S FINALLY SUMMER!!
It’s finally June.. kids will be graduating and out of school, looking forward to a long summer & vacation. I know I did!. I couldn’t wait to get out of school and travel the world playing tennis. Lucky me when my friend and doubles partner Billie Jean King asked me to play doubles at Wimbledon in 1966. Where would I be now without that chance? I did make the most of it!
GRADUATION:
Talk about graduation, I never thought I’d be attending hers at age 82 she got her Bachelor’s in History at Cal State L.A and gave the commencement speech.
She made a life changing decision in 1961 when she was attending CSLA to leave college so she could become the #1 player in the world. That was a good decision because we know she went on to be No. 1 in the world and much more than that!
So kids, make good decisions before and after graduation and if you can use tennis to your advantage, do so.
APRIL & MAY:
April & May did not bring much joy. We lost a member of the tennis community in the desert that was synonymous with kids and teaching…Gordon Zaw-Tun. He was a part of the tennis landscape who spent his life teaching tennis to kids and giving them life-long lessons. On May 30 about 300 family and friends attended his “Celebration of Life” at Well Spring Church in Indian Wells. We got to know more about the man behind the racket and realized he was irreplaceable. In Gordon’s memory, THE LOVE & LOVE TENNIS FOUNDATION is giving away two scholarships for $1,000 each, to one girl and boy in his academy. Details will be forthcoming.
LARRY W. KING:
On the same note I lost another good friend who was a big part of our women’s movement in fighting for equality in the 1970’s….Larry King, former husband to Billie Jean. He lost his battle with Prostate Cancer a couple of weeks ago. He was a catalyst behind BJK & the women and was responsible for helping the women move forward in establishing the WTA in 1973. He helped get Bristol Myers – Clairol to put up equal prize money for the women making the 1973 U.S. Open the first major to give equal prize. Much more than that he was a wonderful loyal friend to me and all those who knew him. He was a dedicated & fun loving husband to his second wife Nancy and his two wonderful children..Sky & Katie King. Kingfish we miss you!
