HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO & MOTHER’S DAY

Hello All…HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO & MOTHER’S DAY!

We are well into Spring and both Coachella Fest & Stagecoach are in the books with record crowds. May is more subdued but definitely a celebratory month starting with “Cinco de Mayo” at our favorite Mexican restaurant Pueblo Grill! and MOTHER’S DAY.

BILLIE JEAN KING DOCUMENTARY “GIVE ME THE BALL”:

“GIVE ME THE BALL”: Is a Billie Jean King Documentary about her life and career that just came out last week. It was produced by Elizabther Wolf & Liz Garbas. I went to see the Premier in Santa Monica at the Aero Theater and it was wonderful. If it is on ESPN’s 30-30 make sure you watch it! I also was invited to Portland, Oregon to view it there on behalf of the International’s Women’s Film Festival. Molly King and her team did a great job of organizing the showing and the community certainly came together in a big way to support women and sports. I also had a chance to visit “The Sports Bra” a bar and eating establishment owned by Jenny Nguyen, a strong supporter of the IWFF and women in sports!

OSUNA CUP: MEXICO VS USA: May 1-3, 2026

The 2026 OSUNA CUP took place this weekend at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens where they play the BNP Paribas Open. The USA lost by 2 (11-9) well contested matches. I watched one in particular where the newphew of the “Great” Rafael Osuna was playing against our American Team. I told him I learned a lot from watching…Rafa was a smooth player like his Uncle Rafael Osuna, who captured a US National Singles Title in 1963, Doubles in 1962 and Wimbledon Doubles in 1963. Osuna was very popular in the US and the USTA created the Osuna Cup to “honor” him after his tragic death in 1969 in a plane crash. CONGRATULATIONS MEXICO TEAM!

GORDON ZAWTUN: April 30, 2026

Gordon was loved by the tennis community for his long time comittment to kids and tennis. Last Thursday, April 30th, Gordon was found in his home onresponsive. I was suppose to meet him that morning at Starbucks for a coffee and to talk about kids and NJTL tournaments which he had always hosted. He’d moved from Palm Valley to Palm Desert Resorter where he continued his kids programs teaching, caring for them and all the things that go with growing junior tennis in the valley. He was totally dedicated to the kids and doing everything possible to teach kids tennis. I don’t know how the tennis community is going to do without him. The Love & Love Tennis Foundation is honoring him by naming a Grant for a boy & a Girl for $1,000 eachTHE GORDON ZAWTUN MEMORIAL TENNIS GRANT”. A criteria will have to be developed in order to implement the Grant. We will definitely miss him and know that he left a huge imprint for us to fill. I know he will have his eye on us as we continue his legacy he is forever in our hearts.

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO: Eat and drink respectfully and responsibly on this special day.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY: Let’s celebrate MOTHER’S DAY WITH JOY…They are special! For those without mother’s you can still honor them by remembering them. They are hard to forget.

Enjoy
