Patsy Daughters with her trophy

Hello Everybody:

We are moving quickly through the year and I hope some of you are warming up as we are here in the desert.

The Love & Love Tennis Foundation would like to wish all of you a very HAPPY VALENTINES AND PASSOVER WEEKEND.

High School Tennis Camps:

The LLTF is busy organizing the summer with kids tennis clinics. The High Schools will hopefully be participating again and will host the kids tennis clinics. We are working with Palm Springs High School, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Desert Mirage & Coachella Valley High School Tennis Teams to organize these kids summer tennis clinics. We hope to have all dates and times confirmed soon and get the word out to all the kids in their neighborhood. We are hopeful that this concept will continue to grow and that all high schools will be able to participate.

The LLTF still continues to work with the Boys & Girls Club and will also be reaching out to other youth organizations. The foundation is part of the USTA/NJTL Tennis Program and remains connected to their new youth tennis programs.

In addition to the youth tennis clinics the foundation also helps out junior tennis players with instructions and equipment and I would like to congratulate Patsy Daughters & Karine Kulidjian whom I have personally worked with who recently won a Level 5 & 6 USTA Junior tournament in San Diego this May.

Summer Tennis Camps at Woodhaven C.C.

The LLTF in conjunction with Woodhaven C.C. and Director of Racquet Sports Rhenn Ramirez is working on his summer tennis camp and I will share that with you as soon as it is confirmed. For further information on the clinics and summer schedule: email: ramtennispickle@gmail.com or call: (760) 895-8786.

We appreciate all donors and their support of the foundation and additional donations can be made on our website. If you have any questions, please call me at: (760) 772-9411.

Harlem Junior Tennis & Education Program
Building Champions For Life

Celebrating Black History Month:
Honoring Our Legacy, Shaping Our Future

While celebrating Black History Month, HJTEP reflects on the rich history of the organization and the vision that continues to drive the program forward.

Founded in 1972 by two Harlem residents and tennis enthusiasts, Claude Cargill and Bill Brown, HJTEP first opened its doors at the 369th Regiment Armory on 143rd Street, using the sport of tennis to teach self-discipline, character-building, and respect for others. Recognizing that few children in Harlem had access to the predominantly white sport, they were inspired by African American tennis icons Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson, both of whom played at the Armory. Cargill and Brown aimed to develop young leaders in their community by addressing the long-standing racial barrier that persisted within the sport’s pipeline.

By 1979, their vision expanded beyond tennis with the introduction of academic tutoring and counseling to support Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students in their pursuit of higher education and professional mobility. Today, HJTEP continues to evolve its programs in response to the needs of the community, building on a legacy that has served more than 25,000 young people.

Black History Spotlight:
Katrina Adams, Trailblazer in Tennis and Leadership

This Black History Month, HJTEP celebrates the incredible legacy and ongoing contributions of its Executive Director and President, Katrina Adams.

Ms. Adams’s journey in tennis began at the age of six in Chicago, leading her to become a two-time Illinois High School Association singles champion and an NCAA doubles champion at Northwestern University. Her success on the court propelled her to a professional career on the WTA Tour, where she claimed 20 career doubles titles before retiring in 1999.

Beyond her playing career, Ms. Adams has been a driving force in tennis leadership. As a USTA national coach (1999-2002), she helped shape the nation’s top players. In 2015, she made history as the first Black, first former professional player, and the youngest person ever to serve as USTA Chair and President. Serving as Vice President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) from 2015-2023, her contributions to the sport of tennis have also extended globally.

Since joining HJTEP in 2005, Ms. Adams has expanded the program’s enrollment to more than 1,000 participants annually with an increased operating budget of more than $2.4 million. Her vision and leadership continue to strengthen HJTEP’s impact, ensuring it remains a beacon of opportunity for young athletes in Harlem.

Stepping Up:
Alumnus Justin Holmes’s Dedication and Leadership

Following in Coach Maurice Willacy’s footsteps, Coach Justin Holmes has seamlessly stepped into the role of Interim Director of High-Performance (HP) on the courts. In doing so, the HJTEP alumnus has earned the admiration and respect of HJTEP’s students and staff. His dedication to the game and young athletes is evident in every practice, drill, and moment he spends mentoring the next generation. HJTEP is grateful for his leadership.

“Working with the kids, coaches, and staff at HJTEP has been such a wonderful experience so far. The kids are the best people I’ve worked for in my life and truly deserve everything from us every day. The coaches and staff are wholeheartedly committed to their work and each and every kid in the program. It’s a family here, and I am happy to be a part of something so special.”
— Justin Holmes

Tournament Highlights:
HJTEP Players Shine in Competition

January was a month of remarkable achievements for HJTEP’s High-Performance program. HJTEP is proud to report the successes of student-athletes Bintu Drame, Cordelia Csencsitz, Jack Jacobs, and Savannah Minter, who emerged as tournament champions. In addition, Amanda Marcano-James and Petra Bojadzievski were finalists, while many others made impressive deep runs to the quarterfinals and semifinals, ensuring that HJTEP remains well-represented in competitive tennis.

Leading the way as role models for younger up-and-coming players, seniors Lina and Lana Waterman, Leila Grey, Joshua Bey, Lula Brown Vann, and Nyla Ferdinand have all received several acceptance letters to top colleges and universities. Both Lula Brown Vann and Nyla Ferdinand are being actively recruited and have received full and partial scholarship offers from high-level collegiate tennis programs.

At the Armory, the coaches have witnessed consistent growth across all levels, from Futures to High-Performance I and High-Performance II. A special recognition goes to Savannah Minter, who secured her first tournament victory after competing in only four tournaments following her ACL rehabilitation. Savannah embodies the values of hard work, patience, and determination, and the coaches could not be prouder of her achievement.

HJTEP’s Winter Tennis Program:
Expanding Access to the Sport

HJTEP continues its mission to bring tennis directly to students through its expanding Winter Tennis Program. With programs in schools such as PS 197, Countee Cullen, and at The Armory, the program is now engaging more than 75 additional students, introducing them to the sport and fostering their growth both on and off the court. Led by dedicated coaches Brian Spigner and Patricia Zapata, these sessions provide young athletes with structured training, skill development, and an opportunity to experience the joy of the game in their schools weekly. As HJTEP reaches more students, it remains committed to making tennis an accessible and transformative force in the Harlem community.

HJTEP’s 53rd Annual Spring Gala

Monday, May 12 will be an unforgettable evening dedicated to celebrating the extraordinary journey of HJTEP’s student-athletes—inner-city youth who are rewriting their futures through the power of tennis, education, and holistic wellness. This year, HJTEP will honor:

Chris Evert: Trailblazing Tennis Hall of Famer, 18x Grand Slam singles champion, and role model who defined excellence and sportsmanship.

Morgan Stanley: A global leader committed to empowering future generations, represented by Chief Marketing Officer, Allison Milligan.

Adding to the night’s excitement, Broadway star Norm Lewis will deliver abreathtaking performance that embodies the spirit of triumph and possibility.
