The 2 weeks at Wimbledon or as they say “fortnight” was outstanding! Despite all the upsets at the start of the greatest tournament in the world…(yes Wimbledon is that for me) which brought an element of surprise and uncertainty for both the men’s and women’s side but probably a little more on the women’s side. The big 3, Alcaraz, Sinner & Novak were still looking good and Sabalenka & Swiatek as well.
When we arrived it was 80 degrees and everyone was melting and wishing for A/C. Coming from Palm Desert with a 100+ it felt great. Nobody in England has aircondition but our lovely PH flat did. We couldn’t have been happier turning it on and planting ourselves directly in front of it and the TV.
There are 2 buildings that sit on the hill right above Court 1. They were built some time in the 70’s and have proven to be a great additions to the neighborhood even though nobody wanted a 10 floor building as it really didn’t fit the quaint homes surrounding SW 19.
Every morning for breakfast I treated myself to my favorite tea and toast. They have the most delicious bread, butter and jam! I was in heaven on the 10th floor and below me in their flat was my Wimbledon partner BJK & Ilana without A/C. I finally got one better this time!!Emoji
The trip down to SW 19 was easy and I got to hit a few balls with Billie Jean and Ilana in the indoor courts. After our the walk up the hill was challenging. I kept reminding myself it was good exercise!!
I’m a member of the “Last 8 Club” which offers certain amenities like credentials for you & your guest, tickets on a match basis and a place to visit with other friends and more! Sometimes we don’t recognize our contemporaries but the ones we’ve been close to we can never forget!
This year we celebrated Betty Stove’s (Dutchshoes) 80th Birthday at our flat. Connie our first WTA Trainer brought all the decorations and revolving candles that set off fireworks like the 4th of July. Frankie Durr, her daughter Jessica, Billie Jean, Ilana and our friend Vicky and Rosemarie were all in attendance. It was a beautiful ocassion to be together celebrating and sharing life & friendships!
Having been fortunate to be able to watch both women’s men’s finals “live” was a bonus! Unfortunately the women’s finals did not reach the desired expectations but hey Amanda Anisimova did great upsetting Sabalenka and getting to the finals! As to the men’s finals once the expectations for Joker came to an end and was humbled by the new generation of Sinner and his power, the spotlight was on the Alcaraz and Sinner rivalry.
On the day of the finals the atmosphere was electric. The fans enjoyed watching the Royals in the Royal Box with the Dutches of Kent sitting in the front row. You could feel the excitement as it raised to a crescendo as Alcaraz and Sinner entered Center Court to a standing ovation!
Now I’m finally back home to reality after 3 days of trying to leave London due to cancelations and delays of flights.
